Convert those visitors!

For those who have not heard the term before, conversion is the term that is used to describe when customers take a desired action on your website. If you are an online shop then that action may be to purchase one of your products, if you are a service company then the action might be to call your 1300 number to make contact while if you are a telephone answering service like Ruby then a conversion would be a customer signing up for a free trial.

Don't get me wrong, traffic coming to your website is extremely important as you will need a critical mass of traffic before you can make any conversions. Once you get that critical mass then the impact that you can have by increasing your conversion rate can become quite significant. For instance, if you run an online store and have 1,000 people coming to your website every day and you have a conversion rate of 2% you will be getting around 20 orders per day. If you can increase that conversion rate to 3% then you will effectively increase your orders and hopefully revenue by 50% (ie, going from 20 to 30 orders.) This can have a huge impact on your business and your profitability.

So, how do you increase your conversions

Increasing your conversions requires a number of things. Firstly, you need to make sure that the page that is hopefully doing the converting has a clear call to action. You should probably only have the one call to action on your page and that call to action should be tied to your goal for that page.

Secondly, you should look at doing some A/B testing of the different elements on your page. A/B testing basically means that you test a new concept against your existing content. The elements that you test could be anything from the colours used, the fonts size used, the content on the page or the images. Once you have your test in place you then measure the conversions from the 2 (through Google Analytics) and if the new one beats your existing page then you look at swapping over to the new page. You then start the process again and try to keep on improving.

Thirdly, look at the content that you have on the page and the content that you have in the site. You should have content that supports your conversion aim and reassures your visitors.

Fourthly, look at adding trust badges to your site. Trust badges are symbols that will help to create a feeling of trust from your visitors. Examples of trust badges are the Mastercard and Visa symbols, a Norton secured seal badge or similar.

There are plenty of other things that could potentially increase your conversion but you need to get out and start testing them to see how they will impact. The key is to start a scientific testing program and just keep on making incremental increases.
